Settling In

On Friday last week we officially moved onto our boat. She was having work done at the factory in Rochefort, a 4 hour sail from La Rochelle. Rochefort and the factory are up the Charente River. Once we made it to open water, we put the sails up and had a nice passage, seeing various old stone forts along the shore.

Over the past few days, we have loaded a ton of stuff onto the boat but somehow the boat keeps swallowing it up. We shipped a pallet of supplies from home which we have transferred onboard. The nine checked bags we travelled with have been unpacked and stored, and have had daily shopping trips to check some more items off the list.

Yesterday we did our big kitchen equipment shop. Pots, measuring spoons, spice containers, and everything in between! This made June feel more like our home and we cooked our first meal aboard.

The day we moved onto the boat, Sonnen created a virtual tour.

We had thought we would leave La Rochelle by Wednesday this week, but we are still waiting on synthetic teak decking repairs, communications equipment installation, and other boat work. While this has been slower than expected, it’s been nice to have more time to get setup and get comfortable with systems.

While we are still recovering from our car explosion incident on Saturday evening (see our Instagram for the video!), we have been balancing boat prep with afternoons finding great beaches and exploring beautiful and historic La Rochelle. The kids are filling their time journaling, playing music, inventing games, and generally spending far more time entertaining eachother than they ever would have dreamed of at home.
